• Technology MADE IN ITALY
Olimpia Splendid was started in 1956, when Evilio Marchesi established Olimpia, using the experience developed in years of work as metal sheet worker, to set up a company specialized in the construction of metal sheet products.
The initial core of what was to become the Olimpia Splendid of today, a fully Italian-owned company that has succeeded on the world stage thanks to innovative products, was established in 1956 in Gualtieri, in the province of Reggio Emilia.
It was founded as an artisan company but in the 60s it had already taken on industrial proportions, becoming world leader in the production of cookers and heating units. In the 80s it entered the air conditioning sector and immediately stood out for its technologically advanced solutions.
The Sixties saw the small artisan company develop into an industrial-scale manufacturer. Thanks to an ever increasing technological foothold and a solid bent toward innovation, the company soon established itself as a leading manufacturer of wood, gas and paraffin heating units.
The Seventies saw a decisive thrust in the company’s growth:
the oil crisis and the resulting general climate of austerity led to a dramatic increase in the demand for wood burners and for gas and paraffin range cookers. This set the groundwork for Olimpia’s leap forward in sales from 2,500 units in 1975 to more than 40,000 in 1980.
In the Eighties, as the crisis came to an end, the market for wood-burning stoves witnessed a downright collapse, also aggravated by the downward economic trend.
Nevertheless, Olimpia Splendid was able to continue on its growth path, also thanks to the arrival of Fernando Marchesi and, above all, a solid, deep-rooted, profound focus on innovation, applied both to product development and communication.
The Nineties was the period of greatest development:
thanks to the quality and design of the product and improvements in the marketing process, Olimpia Splendid became the second largest seller of portable air conditioners in Italy and one of the top three companies in Europe. In 1990, Olimpia Splendid launched Grillo and Windy, two products with an innovative float-duct system that revolutionized the air conditioning market: finally a portable air conditioner that could really cool a room without the use of water. In 1995, the Olimpia Splendid Group was set up with a new corporate organization to better coordinate production and more effectively respond to market demand. In 1997, Olimpia Splendid launched Climapiù®, their first wall split unit: for the first time an air conditioner was seen as a genuine interior decorating item thanks to its elegant, innovative design.
The year 2000 marked a turning point:
this was the year Olimpia Splendid presented Unico®, the first air conditioner without an outdoor unit, that has become the company’s flagship product. The success of Unico® was immediate and has grown steadily each year. With the increase in the number of fixed air conditioners being installed, building façades were being covered with large unsightly packs that detracted from the overall appearance of the buildings. Unico® became the only true alternative to safeguard the beauty of our cities.
The year 2004 saw the birth of Issimo®, presented as the “first truly portable air conditioner” thanks to the extraordinary concept of design, size and manageability combined.
Once again product innovation proved the company’s ability to present cutting-edge solutions that are also “user friendly”. This is why Olimpia Splendid has invested systematically in R&D and has established stable collaborative relationships with major design studios (King & Miranda and Dario Tanfoglio).
In the belief that the future will lean increasingly toward complete systems able to provide comfort in all environments and in all seasons, in 2005 Olimpia Splendid took to Hydronics (water based systems), adding such units to its direct expansion production.
From 2005 up to today
In 2005 Olimpia Splendid entered the Hydronic Plant sector, flanking the production of these types of products with that of direct expansion products. In this way, it completes the strategy of presence on Retail and Plumbing, Sanitary and Related Component channels with a complete range of residential air-conditioning systems.
2005 also marks the beginning of an internationalization strategy, which led to a large increase in the Group’s turnover also thanks to the opening of the first two sales offices: the first established in Madrid, Spain in 2005 and the second established in 2011 in Paris, France.
2006 represents a very important year for Olimpia Splendid because it patented the innovative range of Bi2® fancoils; ultra-slim plant terminals with radiant technology. A beautiful and energy efficient product, a major breakthrough, which allows the Group to establish itself in the residential installations sector.
Additional new technologies and products follow between 2008 and 2010. 2008 is the year of Mimetico, a patented split system, with a completely camouflaged outdoor unit, and also of the PIU’ portable air conditioner range, fitted with Blue Air amplified diffusion technology and Silent technology. 2008 also marks an important turning point for UNICO®, the air conditioner with no outdoor unit. In fact, the first UNICO® with INVERTER technology was developed in the Brescia establishment. Inverter technology developed by Olimpia, enclosed in outstanding aesthetics by King & Miranda. A state-of-the-art product, which encompasses the best of comfort and energy savings: a great market success.
Also in 2010 Olimpia Splendid extends the range of hydronic systems with the entry of the Sherpa® heat pumps, aimed at the growing renewable plant and sustainable technologies sector.
In 2012 the Company presents yet another great innovation in the UNICO® range: UNICO® TWIN, the first air conditioner with no outdoor unit, able to air-condition two rooms. It is a patented technical solution, which allows the classic UNICO® to evolve towards a systemic solution. All of this with no external motor, absolutely consistent with the “respect of architectural heritage” mission, which distinguishes Olimpia Splendid.
2013 is the year that Dolceclima Nano is introduced onto the market, the portable, ultra-compact, light and silent air-conditioner, which has excellent performance at an incredible price.
The continuous investments into Research & Development and attention to design, lead to the launch of the innovative MIA® pellet stove in 2014. The first modern pellet stove which, thanks to a double door system with magnetic closure, can be customized with different covers.
In 2014 Olimpia Splendid also presents another great patented innovation in the UNICO® range. This is Unico® Boiler, the first air-conditioner with no outdoor unit, which when connected to a high energy efficiency boiler, can produce domestic hot water in heat pump mode; therefore with an entirely renewable technology.
But 2014 is also the year of Sherpa Aquadue®, the first multi-purpose heat pump able to simultaneously supply two temperature sets (domestic hot water up to 75o C). A high-tech patent, which allows Olimpia to offer a complete residential system for annual cycle air-conditioning with exclusive use of renewable sources.
In 2015 Olimpia Splendid launches a further development in the UNICO® range: Unico® Air, slim, compact and extraordinarily silent. Thanks to latest generation sound-proof material and to accurate engineering of the components, UNICO® AIR is a product that is enormously close to the sound level and overall dimensions of a traditional split; all of this with no outdoor unit.
2016, which coincides with the Company’s 60th anniversary, starts with the presentation of the best UNICO® ever: Unico® Air Inverter, which adds the performance and energy savings of inverter technology to the elegant and slim design and silence of Unico® Air.
Furthermore, Olimpia Splendid announces the integration of a series of revolutionary digital touch commands on the Bi2® terminals and the launch of SiOS®, a patented hydronic system developed for construction processes in Class A.
The Expocomfort Exhibition and Convention, held in Milan in March is the perfect showcase for the launch of UNICO® CLOUD, with dual Wi-Fi/Bluetooth technology command, which allows all UNICO® functionalities to be governed from remote.
In 2017 Olimpia Splendid enters in the evaporative air coolers’ market segment through the launch of new Pelèr range: these products are different from the traditional fans for their water operated system.
As part of the internationalization process, in 2017 a new commercial branch was inaugurated in Sao Paulo (Brazil), in order to directly monitor the Latin American market and figure out its specific needs.
